Selling New York: A New Show I’m Dying to Watch
I subscribe to the HGTV newsletter (you might as well know – I’m a HGTV slut). I’ve been living in a temporary furnished apartment for the past couple months, and then out of the country before that, so it’s been a looong time since I’ve been able to tune into my favorite channel.
And while I wasn’t looking, they went and launched the biggest real estate porno show of all time: Selling New York. Granted, I haven’t seen it yet. This shall soon be rectified. But just peeking at the show’s webpage was enough to inspire me to place an immediate call to Comcast: “I don’t care that your product is tantamount to highway robbery! Get me cable–fast!”
For those who don’t get your HGTV delivered intravenously, the show takes you through amazing New York City pads which sell for a minimum of $2 million. Which, honestly, seems a bit low to me, since I figure in Manhattan, that kind of money might get you a slightly non-hellish apartment at best. But no matter.
Here’s the kind of place I’ll soon be drooling over (once the darn cable guy gets here):
In my sluttier HGTV days, I’ve been known to shout at the TV during shows like Property Virgins and My First Place (I’m not linking to their pages because annoying loud videos automatically play). I get really wrapped up in the messages TV sends about real estate, and I get super irate when I think irresponsible messages are being sent. You might’ve guessed from my Cougar Town post. Oftentimes, these house-hunter shows showcase bad real estate practices like people buying more than they can afford, promising to drop out of school and get a job to help pay a big mortgage (this really happened), and putting 0% down. That stuff gets my goat.
So once I get my cable hooked up, watch out. I just can’t help myself.
What are your favorite real estate/home design shows? Do you get as wrapped up in them as I seem to?

At RSRE, we know how intimidating it can be to even consider buying a home, and we hope to help demystify the process, give helpful unbiased advice, and inspire you along the way. [
