Extreme Houses: Living Like a Church Mouse

May 7, 2010 by Rebecca

The New York Times recently featured some extreme living situations. The Times loves nothing more than chronicling the lengths people will go to in order to grab a piece of the fabled city of New York. This piece is different though, since it’s clear these people could afford a normal living space, if they so desired one. But no, they choose to live in converted churches, shipping containers, and caves. And not just in New York–these people are all over the country.

I love creative interpretations of the concept of living and of home. These people are bold and resourceful, and I like their style.

Possibly the best "the Johnsons at home" photo ever.

"While I didn't specifically invite a New York Times photographer to join me in the tub, I suppose I don't mind."

I could make a caveman joke here, but I have a feeling these people have heard them all:

"OMG Dad, I'm so bored and my body hasn't been able to produce Vitamin D in weeks!"

Ok fine, points to the Cave House for looking awesome on the outside.

And finally, here we have some recycling extraordinaires, who have built their home out of used shipping containers:

Wouldn't there be a really bad echo in there?

Again, points for presentation. Looks awesome from this angle.
